The 2011 Annual Conference of the New Zealand Ecological Society, also incorporating the New Zealand Society of Plant Biologists Annual Conference, will be held at the Energy Events Centre, Rotorua. The conference will run from Sunday 28 August to Thursday 1 September 2011. The student day is on Sunday 28 August, followed by three days of concurrent sessions from Monday 29 August to Wednesday 31 August, with field trips on Thursday 1 September. The conference dinner will be on the Wednesday evening, where the 60th anniversary of the Society will be celebrated.
We have an excellent, central city venue for the conference, located in the Government Gardens on Queens Drive, with a large main theatre and good quality adjacent theatres for concurrent sessions.
Rotorua is home to a diverse range of ecological environments and will provide attendees with great opportunities to see and experience real ecological issues. Even the conference venue is within walking distance of a number of interesting ecological features including Lake Rotorua, Sulphur Bay (an important site for water birds) and geothermal features. The venue is also close to the centre of Rotorua, with a great array of cafes and bars. We encourage delegates to take advantage of the outstanding opportunities Rotorua offers; so bring your mountain bikes (there is over 100km of fantastic singletrack), walking shoes/boots, binoculars, or running shoes (the Redwood tracks are outstanding). The conference will provide a forum to meet, share, and discuss current ideas and issues in ecology and plant biology. Potential attendees include ecologists, plant biologists, planners, and practitioners; including those involved in research, academic teaching, consultants, Department of Conservation, regional and district councils, Crown Research Institutes, resource use, landowners, community groups, students and teachers.
